Public Law Children

For the past 18 years Basharat has practiced exclusively in the fields of Public and Private Law, establishing himself as a formidable advocate who will vigorously defend the interests of his clients from local authorities, parents and children.

Basharat regularly appears in complex Care proceedings involving serious neglect, sexual abuse and non-accidental injury and was involved as a junior in one of the longest running finding of fact hearing of sexual abuse in the High Court representing the interests of a vulnerable party.

Due to his own background and understanding of Indian subcontinent customs and norms, Basharat is regularly sought after and instructed on behalf of clients where there are sensitive issues of cultural and religious considerations within care proceedings. Basharat is able to use his knowledge to tease out the intricacies involved in his client’s cases.  Issues that have been considered range from conflicts in religious education and practices, demonization and harm to children, forced marriages, servitude and modern slavery, advancement and breaches of Article 6 and Article 8 cultural and religious needs of children and parents.

Basharat is particularly adept when acting against local authorities to hold their internal procedures to account and will often expose failings where they occur. Equally he is very skilled at presenting local authority cases and ensuring that social work practitioners are at ease to present their evidence to the court.
